Books

Mansarda’s books are created where literature, dedicated editorial work, illustration and design come together. We choose them carefully – with the desire to rediscover, edit and present in a new way manuscripts that deserve a second life.

We shape each book as a complete work in which the text remains at the centre, while the editorial approach and distinctive visual language give it a new face. We select authorial voices, themes and stories with lasting value and the ability to connect different generations of readers. Mansarda’s publishing line of books was launched with two poetry collections by Vitomir Vito Nikolić – Drumovi će poželjet ludaka and Kletva.

Adrijana Husić, from Trace • Between The Roads Will Long for a Madman and The Curse, precisely one heavy sigh of time has passed. (…) I believe the pages before you carry an emotion different from that of wandering the roads. Together, we will follow the arc of a life—from birth to its end. From the first image of childhood to the final numbered planks. Not as a chronology, but as an experience. The way life truly carries us: never in a straight line, still less in an orderly one, but in surges of warmth and irony, tenderness and bitterness, laughter that hurts and pain that somehow becomes funny. (…) This book comes into our hands and yours on the anniversary of Vito’s birth—not in the least by chance. With it, we celebrate him, his life and everything he left us.

Danica Nikolić, from Thunder into Our Souls • With The Curse, the second collection of Vito’s poetry, we captured his rhythm and lifeblood. With the first collection, we gave his admirers the opportunity to enjoy, above all, the poetry itself, but also the harmony that emerged between the verses, illustrations, design and accompanying texts. With this second collection, we complete and bring the story full circle—before you are the poems of Vitomir Nikolić that were not included in the first volume. (…) I believe that this edition completes the publication of his poetic oeuvre, as not a single verse he wrote has been omitted. And that is what his admirers had wanted and deserved for many years.

Adrijana Husić, from A Kaleidoscope of EncountersThe Roads Will Long for a Madman is a personal selection and a tribute—a desire to make Vito’s words accessible. It also carries a great responsibility, because I have heard and read countless times that, during his lifetime, Vito was never published by publishing houses; he did everything himself. These 120 pages bring together 60 poems and 20 specially commissioned illustrations, symbolically binding them as a reflection of time, its many layers, and the fragments of a life. (…) On these pages, I transformed a minute of silence for the living into an invitation: that one day, when we are gone, someone might pick up this book and find themselves within it.

Danica Nikolić, from A Mosaic of Memories • Just as admirers of Vito’s poetry have, over all these decades, helped ensure that his words never fall into oblivion, their interest has also helped me transform his premature death from the mere trauma of losing a parent into a wound from which new memories and new ideas continually emerge—ideas about how his poetry can remain accessible to all those who love and feel it. One such idea is the collection you now hold before you. It grew directly out of memories and took shape in the setting where Vito published his poetry during his lifetime.
