Montenegro now has its first digital colouring book. The Digital Colouring Book app takes children on a creative and educational journey through the nature, towns and landscapes of Montenegro. Developed as part of the Digital Colours of Montenegro project, it is a natural continuation of the successful Montenegrin Colouring Book series, which has been reaching children across the country for the past five years.
The bilingual app is available free of charge for iOS and Android, as well as through the Mansarda web platform.
From print to screen: 35+ editions, 70,000 copies and countless coloured drawings
The first Montenegrin Colouring Book was published in 2021 as a collaboration between CS Cassiopeia and studio ribizla. Since then, more than 35 printed editions have been published, with a total print run exceeding 70,000 copies, including special editions developed in collaboration with partners and institutions.
The colouring books are used in kindergartens, schools, tourist centres and family settings, nurturing something that screens can hardly replace: a pencil in hand, a quiet afternoon and drawings transformed into little works of art.
The collaboration between CS Cassiopeia and studio ribizla. also gave rise to Mansarda, a publishing platform built around a shared mission: to bring Montenegro closer to children through formats that combine learning and play.
Digital Colours of Montenegro grew from that same idea, allowing children to discover the country one drawing at a time, alongside the already familiar Creative Blocks – the digital continuation of the traditional memory games.
The first Digital Puzzles are also in development and will be available as a Phone/iPad/Tablet app as well as a web version.
An app for learning through play
The app currently features almost 100 drawings across four digital colouring books:
- Miraculous Montenegro – landscapes and towns across Montenegro
- Birds of Montenegro – bird species found in Montenegro
- Forests of Montenegro – forests and trees found across the country
- From the Garden – fruit and vegetables from our gardens
New editions will continue to be added to the digital collection.
Colouring has been designed to be simple even for the youngest users. Children select a colour and a brush size, then move their finger across the drawing, keeping the colour beneath the outlines so the lines are always visible. A longer press on a colour opens lighter and darker shades, the eraser removes colour, and the undo button reverses the previous action.
Completed drawings are saved in the gallery, where they can be reopened and continued, shared or saved to the device. The app is completely free, with no advertising or in-app purchases, and can be used without an internet connection.
Digital Colours of Montenegro grew out of the same idea as the printed colouring books: to introduce Montenegro’s natural and cultural heritage to children in a language they are familiar with.
Through carefully created illustrations, the project contributes to the education of younger generations, allowing them to discover the species, landscapes and towns of their country through colour. Particular attention is given to Montenegro’s natural heritage through editions dedicated to birds, forests and biodiversity.
“For five years, we have been printing colouring books, and we still believe in putting a pencil in a child’s hand. The Digital Colouring Book is not a replacement for our printed editions, but a way for our drawings to reach places that a print run cannot – and to make screen time more creative,” says Adrijana Husić, editor of the editions.
By bringing the content into a digital environment, the project not only preserves and presents Montenegro’s rich heritage but also makes it accessible to a wider audience, including an international one.
The app is designed for preschool and early primary school children and can be used in kindergartens and schools, as part of family activities, or as a valuable tool for anyone wishing to connect with Montenegro’s identity. It is available in both Montenegrin and English, and users can switch languages at any time with a single tap.
